Background of the Study

Religious conflicts are among the most sensitive issues reported by the media, requiring journalists to navigate complex ethical considerations. In Funtua Local Government Area, Katsina State, religious conflicts have occasionally escalated due to biased or sensationalized media coverage, further deepening societal divides. Ethical journalism demands accuracy, impartiality, and sensitivity when reporting on religious conflicts, as such reporting can either foster understanding or exacerbate tensions. However, journalists in Funtua face challenges such as political interference, inadequate training, and the pressure to prioritize audience engagement over ethical reporting. This study explores the ethical challenges faced by journalists in Funtua, emphasizing the need for responsible reporting practices to promote peace and understanding (Adebayo & Musa, 2024; Ibrahim, 2023).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Media coverage of religious conflicts in Funtua has occasionally been criticized for sensationalism, bias, and inadequate context, leading to increased tensions and reduced public trust in journalism. Despite the critical role of ethical journalism in mitigating conflict, there is a lack of research addressing the specific ethical dilemmas faced by journalists in Funtua. This gap hinders the development of effective strategies to improve reporting practices and promote ethical standards in conflict-sensitive journalism (Bello & Yusuf, 2023; Okoro, 2024).

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it highlights the role of ethical journalism in fostering understanding and reducing tensions in religiously sensitive contexts. By focusing on Funtua, the research provides localized insights into the ethical challenges faced by journalists and offers practical recommendations to improve conflict-sensitive reporting.
